An access log is a detailed list of all the files which were accessed by the visitors of a given website. Any file which was requested in some way will be listed, so if you have just one page with 3 embedded pics, one video and one embedded text file, for instance, the access log will contain a total of six entries - one for any of the six files which were accessed when the visitor opened the page. A log typically shows the file name and path, the date, along with the visitor’s OS, web browser and IP address. In some cases you could also find the referrer websites that sent the visitors to your Internet site. The info an access log file contains is in human-readable plain text format. It could be processed by special software on a laptop or computer and used to prepare reports on the overall performance of a website, independent of the web stats your web hosting server may have generated.
